![]() My first real method book was the Mickey Baker Jazz book. My body loves that simple stuff.nice to dance to.the groove is available.yeah. I enjoy music for the body.4 changes a measure.that's music for the brain. ![]() Now.I find them boring and a bit soulless. When I was younger, I went through a "groovy set of changes" stage. His transposing piano was fitted with a knee lever that moved everything up a half tone.Į's too bad that simple structure is boring to you. When I was first learning to play guitar, years and years ago, a good friend of mine who played in a rock 'n' roll band taught me 4 chords (they were C, Am, F and G, by the way), and told me, "Now you can play half the rock 'n' roll songs ever written." What he didn't mention was those were the half written before 1962.īut.Graham is right.Irving Berlin wrote almost all of those great songs in F# (Black keys) Ain't happened to me yet, but it has obviously happened to other pelple because they've put things like that in their songs. You want to know that stuff because there do occur situations where the particular sound you need at a specific point just happens to be that A-flat-minor-diminished-seventh, and you want to be able to recognize it and use it. (3) That said, yes, I can play a lot of those "fruity chords," and I know what notes make 'em up, and where on the neck they're easiest to play, because you do pick up that stuff over time playing with other people. And I do complain about "fruity chords" a lot when other people play them, and I do use my capo a lot, and I have been regularly quoted as saying that if you're going to be playing country music, you need to be using chords of one syllable. I have used as many as four in a song, but I don't publicize it too much-people might feel I was puttin' on airs. (2) I write country music, and accordingly subscribe to the Loretta Lynn Theory ("Three chords and the truth"). "Here's Bob Young, folks, playing the A-flat-minor-diminished-7th. (1) Hire Mike and Bob, especially since they're volunteering to work for cheap-but invite me, please, 'cause I want to see how this works. Http:/ / bands/ 2/ grahamhendersonmusic.htm Three chords and the truth may work for some, but for the most part, I believe you won't find a lot of their material in the spider farm at my place. It is good to learn to use a heap of colours.īig thing apart from having that ability, it to know when three, or even one is enough and use it. I like it and I also know I could sing any song I worote to that, to something written in the one key and with just three chords. Using the deaqdly three, and somtimes a fourth of whatever key I am in. I got one called key Swinging Fool that changes keys every four bars from memory. One advantage of having a dead boring vox I guess. ![]() I don't know if they shot ya for this guys, but I sometimes sing Summertime in a major key, and it is rare anybody wakes up to the fact. (*I also know some of them, and probably all of them can be played to good advantage using more chords. I know a few songs with only one chord in them and they sound alright. You can play most songs with either the deadly three, or a whole mess of the little buggers.īy the way.You sure that was E flat Irving used Mike? Chords are interchangable.Ĭhords are a bit of background noise to fill in the dead spots. Now I have studied this subject more maybe than the average joe I believe, and I am here to tell you your time would be better spent fooling around with a bit of playing rather than wasting time wondering how many chords any song needs.Ĭhords are optional.
